Scenario A: Your Emerson Thermostat Shows Cooling, But The Temperature Isn't Dropping
This happened to us last August. The Sensi thermostat said it was 72°F setpoint and the system was "cooling," but the office felt like a sauna. My first instinct? Blame the thermostat. But that's rarely the case.
What I Check First
1. The air filter. Sounds basic, I know. But I've seen office managers swear the filter was "fine" when it was basically a solid sheet of dust. A clogged filter restricts airflow, and the system can't cool effectively. We change ours every 60 days now, no exceptions.
2. The condenser unit outside. Our unit is behind the building, and nobody thinks to check it. Leaves, debris, even a plastic bag can block airflow. I found a vendor's lunch wrapper stuck to the coil once—took 10 minutes to fix.

2. The condenser coil is dirty. Our dryer sits next to the compressor. Dust gets everywhere. If the coil is dirty, heat exchange drops. We clean it with compressed air every 90 days.
3. The unit is overloaded. If you added more equipment without checking the dryer's capacity, it might be working harder than it's designed for. Check the specs. This was our problem—we added two new air tools and didn't account for the extra load.
How to Figure Out Which Scenario You're In
This part matters most: knowing which fix applies to your situation. Here's a quick decision guide:
- Is the problem in a conditioned space (office)? Start with the thermostat—check settings, filter, condenser. If none of those explain it, call an HVAC tech.
- Is the problem in a workshop or maintenance area? Focus on the air compressor and associated lines. Check for leaks first—low-hanging fruit.
- Is the problem on a production line with compressed air? The refrigerated dryer is likely the culprit. Check refrigerant and coil cleanliness before calling a service rep.
I keep a laminated cheat sheet on the wall in each area. Sounds old-school, but it saves time. When someone says "it's not cooling," they go to the right spot first instead of wandering around like I used to.
