Thermostat Replacement, AC Compressor Trouble, and Dehumidifier vs Air Purifier: An HVAC FAQ

Full disclosure before the questions: I handle HVAC and refrigeration controls orders for commercial buildings. I've personally made and documented nine significant mistakes that added up to roughly $34,000 in wasted budget. Now I keep a pre-purchase checklist by my desk, and those mistakes are mainly why this article exists.

These are questions I get from facility folks, small building owners, and sometimes contractors after a project goes sideways.

It depends on what you count. A thermostat replacement is not just the box price. It includes labor, wiring check, wall repair, and maybe an extra visit if the old system needs a common wire or adapter. You also need to count what happens after installation. A smart thermostat with runtime data is useful for spotting the pattern. After I see the pattern, I call a tech to check amp draw, pressures, and airflow. The diagnostic visit costs money. The guess-and-replace loop costs more.
