Emerson Thermostat Snowflake Blinking? AC Not Turning On and Crawl Space Dehumidifier Questions

I'm not an HVAC technician. I'm an office administrator at a 140-person engineering firm, which means I manage vendor relationships, purchase orders, and whatever facility problem lands in my inbox. I've done that since 2020, and I've learned when a thermostat issue is a service call and when it just needs a few minutes. This FAQ covers the questions people actually search when they end up with an Emerson thermostat snowflake blinking, an Emerson thermostat not turning on AC, or a damp area under a building that might need a crawl space dehumidifier.

1. Why is the snowflake blinking on my Emerson thermostat and the AC won't turn on?

It's easy to assume the thermostat is failing. But a blinking snowflake usually means the thermostat is waiting, not calling. On many Emerson thermostats, the blinking snowflake appears after a power interruption or after the cooling system was turned off for less than a few minutes. The compressor protection timer needs to count down before the outdoor unit can restart. Give it five to ten minutes.

People think blinking snowflake means 'AC should be blowing now.' Actually, it can mean the thermostat is intentionally delaying the AC. If the snowflake goes solid and the outdoor condenser starts, the system was fine all along.

2. Emerson thermostat not turning on AC: what does an office manager check first?

If the snowflake is solid, but the AC still isn't running, I go through this list before calling anyone:

  1. Confirm the system mode is set to Cool, not Off or Heat.
  2. Set the temperature a degree or two below room temperature. If the setpoint is only a fraction below, the thermostat may not make a strong enough call for cooling.
  3. Replace the thermostat batteries if the screen is dim, blank, or if there is a low battery indicator. Low batteries cause weird control behavior.
  4. Change the air filter if it is dirty. Poor air movement can make a system short-cycle or freeze.
  5. Check the condensate float switch near the indoor air handler. That switch kills cooling when the drain line is clogged. It has stopped our AC more than once.
  6. Look at the outdoor condenser and breaker. If the condenser fan is not turning, reset the shutoff or breaker once. If it trips again, call a technician.

A dehumidifier is a small refrigeration system. A fan pulls humid air across a cold evaporator coil, and the water in the air condenses on the coil. The water drips into a pan or drain line. The air then passes over a warm condenser coil and returns to the room drier and slightly warmer. That's why a dehumidifier does not cool like an air conditioner; it takes the moisture out and leaves some heat behind.

A crawl space dehumidifier works the same way but is designed for unconditioned, damp spaces. It usually uses more corrosion-resistant materials and has a drain connection so you don't need to empty a bucket. We installed one after finding condensation on floor joists in our building's crawl space.

4. Is a crawl space dehumidifier the first thing to install in a wet crawl space?

Not until you deal with the water source. People think a dehumidifier removes humidity, so it should fix condensation. But if groundwater is entering or the crawl space floor is exposed dirt, the dehumidifier will run constantly and the space will still feel damp.

According to the EPA (epa.gov/mold), controlling moisture is the key to preventing mold. In our case, we fixed the grading and added a vapor barrier before expecting the dehumidifier to work. If a contractor quotes you a dehumidifier but ignores a wet floor, ask why.

5. Is it safer to hire a contractor who can do everything?

No, at least not for this kind of work. People think a one-stop provider is less stressful because there are fewer contractors to manage. The better signal is usually the opposite: a specialist who admits what they don't do.

During our 2024 crawl space project, the company that installed the crawl space dehumidifier told me to get the space encapsulated first, even though they didn't provide encapsulation. They could have taken the whole project and done a poor job. Instead, they said they were good at dehumidification and not the other part. That honesty earned my trust. I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises.

6. Can an Emerson thermostat control a crawl space dehumidifier?

I would not treat a thermostat as the main humidity controller for a separate dehumidifier. Thermostats are meant to control temperature. Our crawl space dehumidifier runs on its own humidistat, so it turns on when relative humidity rises even if no one changes a setting. Some HVAC systems have integrated dehumidification features, but that is a system design decision. Let a qualified controls or HVAC vendor decide how to wire it.

7. When should I stop troubleshooting and call a professional?

Stop at the point where the task needs a licensed trade. I don't open sealed refrigeration circuits. I don't work inside a condenser unit. If the outdoor unit hums but the fan won't spin, if there is ice on the refrigerant line, if the breaker resets and then trips, or if the Emerson thermostat still won't power on after new batteries, call an HVAC tech.

The last time I did this, the technician found a weak capacitor. The Emerson thermostat was fine. No amount of batteries or leaf blowing would have fixed that. I gave the tech my exact list of checks, he found the bad part, and the building cooled down. Knowing my boundary probably saved us an afternoon of guessing.
